The smoke signals on Sunday morning have pointed toward Fran McCaffery being the next coach of the Iowa men’s basketball team.

Andy Katz of ESPN had reported Sunday morning that Iowa really likes Dayton’s Brian Gregory, but that the Hawkeyes don’t want to wait until Dayton’s season is over, which could come as early as Tuesday night or as late as Thursday night.  It’s hard to buy that report, given we are talking about 48 or so more hours.  It just doesn’t make much sense.

One of our readers sent me this email on March 19th, one that I overlooked as I reveived close to 125 emails on that one day alone:

“If you consider where he is from (Philadelphia, where he played) who he has worked for and coached for, (Digger Phelps) and what he has accomplished in his own head coaching career at Siena, this guy needs to have his name in the mix and be considered.  I know his family and have met Fran myself and he is a consummate professional and extremely personable, something Iowa has not had since the Tom Davis era.”
