The Iowa Hawkeyes ventured out onto the road for the second straight game and the result was an 81-71 loss to Iowa State in Hilton Coliseum.

Iowa committed just 12 turnovers in the game, a solid total for a young team with one true point guard. But Iowa State had just nine, plus an 11-point advantage at the foul line.

Matt Gatens led Iowa with 20 points, including four shots from beyond the arc. Jarryd Cole scored 16 points on 6 of 9 shooting from the floor and Cully Payne added 15. Freshman Brennan Cougill scored 12 points off the bench for Iowa to go along with a game high 10 rebounds.

But Iowa had no answer for Craig Brackins, who was held to a season low one year ago in Carver Hawkeye Arena. He erupted for 28 points, 20 of them coming in the first half, on 9 of 13 shooting from the floor. Marquis Gilstrap added 13 and 10 rebounds.

Iowa hit 11 of its 26 three point attempts for a respectable 43% for the game. The Hawkeyes were coached by assistant Chad Walthall as Todd Lickliter missed his third straight game as he recovers from surgery to repair his carotid artery.
