Almost 17 years ago to the date, Chris Street was tragically killed when his vehicle was hit by a snow plow.  The next place Iowa visited to play basketball was the Breslin Center, where they beat the Spartans in a dramatic come-from-behind victory.  Iowa has not won in East Lansing since that fateful day.  17 years and 14 tries later, Iowa has yet to come away from the Spartans’ home court with a win.  It’s not so much the number of losses, but the way Iowa has lost the games that is the most troubling.  It’s been a house of horror for the Hawkeyes the past decade-plus.  20 point blowout losses are the rules, not the exceptions.  Now Iowa brings one of its least acclaimed teams it’s had since they last won in East Lansing into the Breslin Center against a Top 10 Michigan State team that is just now starting to play really good basketball.  I’m not sure how this can be looked at as anything but a recipe for disaster.  If Iowa (some way, some how) wins this game, it will go down as one of the greatest upset in Iowa Basketball history – that’s what the Hawkeyes are up against in East Lansing.

PLAYERS TO WATCH FOR:

Kalin Lucas.  Since Izzo told him to go home from practice, Kalin has been more like the guy that won BTPOTY last year.  He’s on a mission and Iowa doesn’t have anyone to stop him.
Draymond Green. Smart, crafty, and does good things with the ball.  Hits the glass well and his very effective on offense.  As bad as a matchup Lucas is, Green might be more difficult.  I’d think May gets his assignment.
The Bench.  Izzo can throw so many different people and looks at Iowa.  The Hawkeyes are so thin that MSU’s bench is going to be huge for them.

KEYS TO THE GAME:

  • Limit turnovers.  Limit possessions.  Keep this game as low scoring as possible.
  • Give Fuller a chance to stay on a roll.  Back to back great performances by Aaron.  Give him a chance to keep it up.
  • Michigan State lives on the offensive boards.  Morgan, Green, Roe… heck, everyone on the MSU team, finds ways to create extra possessions in that regard.  Hawks need to get a body on everyone.
  • Road shock.  Iowa hasn’t played in a place like the Breslin Center yet this year.  There will be a huge shock factor involved for the freshman, they have to try to be as poised as possible.

PREDICTION: Iowa is has lost its last 14 games at the Breslin Center over a span of 17 years, this year doesn’t look to change that trend.    Iowa 55,  Michigan State 79
