Iowa Ranks #20 in AP Basketball Poll

Raise your hand if last week you thought the Iowa basketball team would be ranked this week, prior to their trip to Madison Square Garden?

Nobody?

Of course, that makes the most sense, but after a pair of convincing wins against Oregon and Connecticut, the Hawkeyes check in at #20 in this week’s AP Poll.

Oregon was the preseason favorite to win the Pac-12 and Iowa swatted them away, then they churned out an early double-digit lead against UConn that they did not relinquish.

The wins in themselves are great, but how Iowa won those games should inspire a little more confidence for the rest of this season.

Iowa was the tougher team in both games.  Iowa played mentally tough, too.  Dare I say they even had a bit of swagger to them, as if they knew something no one else did.

Connor McCaffery was a revelation last week, proving all doubters, including this one, wrong.  Tyler Cook was as active as we have ever seen him without the ball and in pure attack mode with it.  Luka Garza continues to get better and is already playing at a level few Iowa centers have hit.

Consider that Iowa beat UConn by 19 while Jordan Bohannon and Joe Wieskamp and Isaiah Moss scored a combined 16 points…that ain’t too shabby.

College hoops remains a guards game, but if Iowa can be competent there, and early indications are that it can be, and continue to play defense at the level we saw this past week, the Hawkeyes should be in a solid position to return to the NCAA tournament.

Yes, it’s just four games, but I like what I see.
