Bettendorf point guard D.J. Carton created a buzz Thursday night when he released a list containing his Top 6 schools via Twitter.

The colorful and creative social media edit showed Ohio State, Iowa, Michigan, Marquette, Indiana and Xavier. Iowa State, Wisconsin, Illinois, Creigthon and Minnesota were among the schools that offered but didn’t make the cut.

The Badgers might be the most surprising omission from Carton’s top choices. They were among the first schools to offer and he’d built a strong relationship with assistant coach Dean Oliver, a former Hawkeye point guard.

Perhaps Wisconsin’s depth at the position played into its absence. It has incoming freshman Tia Strickland and sophomore D’Mitrik Trice at point guard along with sophomore combo guard Brad Davison.

Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery has made Carton a priority in the 2019 class after offering him last summer. McCaffery has watched almost all of Carton’s AAU games in person this spring.

The Hawkeyes have junior Jordan Bohannon and redshirt freshman Connor McCaffery, Fran’s son, as point guards expected on their roster this coming season. Bohannon can slide to shooting guard as well.

Rivals and 247 both rank Carton (6-3, 190) as a four-star recruit. Rivals sees him as the No. 30 prospect regardless of position in the ’19 class, while 247 has him at No. 37.

It should be noted that Carton named his “top six schools” and not his “final six schools.” That would indicate that he’s open to other programs offering. A big July on the AAU circuit could bring the blue bloods into the picture as he’s already on their radar.
