IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz opened up his press conference Tuesday here at the football performance center addressing something heavy on the hearts of everyone associated with his program. He offered his respects to the family and friends of former Hawkeye running back Derrick Mitchell Jr., who passed away following an automobile accident on Friday.

“You knew that was a tough circumstance. So it’s just a very tough thing, and way too young for something like that to happen. Certainly our condolences with his entire family and just a sad thing to relay,” Ferentz said.

Micthell Jr., 24, played for Iowa from 2013-16 before leaving the program as a graduate transfer for Incarnate Word. He moved to running back from wide receiver during the spring of 2015. He caught four passes for 41 yards in a loss to Stanford in the Rose Bowl following that season.

According to NBC 5 in his hometown of St. Louis, police said they responded around 6:30 a.m. Friday to an accident involving Mitchell Jr. in the city. He was transported to a hospital in critical condition. His vitals were unstable at the time, police said.

In March, another former Iowa running back, Damon Bullock, died in a car accident near his home in Texas. He played for the program from ’11-14.

Mitchell Jr. helped the Hawkeyes complete one of their most memorable years in ’15. They won all 12 regular-season contests and fell just short in the Big Ten title game against Michigan State. This fall he’d just begun his first season as the offensive coordinator at Career Academy, a high school in St. Louis.

Tuesday, his teammates and classmates at Iowa remembered his contributions, but more importantly, his friendship.
