Longtime Iowa basketball coach Fran McCaffery used his voice for speaking out against systemic racism in American in light the death of George Floyd last week in Minneapolis.

“I am heartbroken over the recent events happening across our country. These events highlight the fact that systemic racial injustice demands change,” he wrote in a social media post release by Iowa Basketball. As a society, we must stand together.”

“As someone who is in a unique position to coach and mentor young men from all walks of life, I am particularly angered for my student-athletes of color. We live in a country where everyday life poses a risk to them. I worry about their well-being, both physical and emotional.”

“Positive change only takes place through action. We must respect and support one another to build a better future.”

McCaffery just completed his 10th season at Iowa and began his coaching career in 1985.

Earlier in the day, the University of Iowa released a statement from athletics director Gary Barta with a video from earlier in the year.

Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren, who played basketball with McCaffery at Penn, announced he is starting an anti-hate and anti-racism coalition.

Steve Roe, Iowa assistant athletics director in charge of athletic communications, told HN on Monday that certain members of the staff would rather not speak out publicly.

“Some coaches preferred to address (it) privately with (their) teams and let (Barta’s statement) be out there,” Roe wrote in a text message.
