Hawkeye Football Finishes in Top 25 of 2 Major Polls

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The final returns are in. Iowa football finishes the 2019 season ranked among the nation’s Top 15 teams in the two major polls.

The Hawkeyes (10-3) wrapped up the campaign with a 49-24 victory against USC Dec. 17 in the Holiday Bowl. The last AP and Coaches ratings were released following Monday’s national championship game, which saw LSU knock off Clemson, 42-25.

The AP voted Iowa came No. 15. It was ranked every week by this service for the first time in 21 seasons under coach Kirk Ferentz and for the first time since ’91.

It landed in the final Top 25 for the eighth time in the 21 years under Ferentz and for the third time this decade. It showed up in back to back seasons for the first time since ’08-09.

Four Big Ten teams finished ahead of the Hawkeyes this season. Ohio State ended up third, followed by Penn State (9), Minnesota (10) and Wisconsin (11). Michigan wound up at 18.

Fifteen was the sixth highest finish under Ferentz outside of the years it showed up in the Top 10 (’02-04, ’09, ’15). It checked in at No. 25 a year ago.

The Hawkeyes were left out of the Coaches’ Poll at the end of ’18. They landed at No. 15 this season, meaning it was the first time they finished the year in both rankings since ’15.

The Hawkeyes reached at least 10 wins in a season for the sixth time under Ferentz and the ninth time in program history.
