Hawkeye Forward Cordell Pemsl Enters the Transfer Portal

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa announced Friday that redshirt junior forward Cordell Pemsl has entered the transfer portal and will be leaving the Hawkeye basketball program. He was expected to graduate at the of this semester and be eligible immediately at his new school.

The Dubuque Walhert product suffered through various injuries during his Iowa career. He red shirted last season after having a medical procedure.

“I would like to thank my teammates, coaches, and fans for a memorable four years at the University of Iowa,” Pemsl said in a university press release.

“I am grateful for the support Hawkeye Nation has shown me through many difficult times. With that being said, I am going to finish my degree and plan on completing my final year of eligibility at another school next season. I wish my teammates the best of luck in the future and appreciate everything the University of Iowa has done for me.”

Pemsl’s departure brings Iowa down to the 13-man, NCAA scholarship limit with eight players returning and five incoming freshmen. The Hawkeyes still are waiting to hear if center Luka Garza and wing Joe Wieskamp will be testing the NBA Draft process.

Pemsl (6-9, 248) played in 96 career games on teams that averaged 19 victories over the last four seasons. He averaged 5.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.2 assists.

“Cordell is graduating this year, and I can’t thank him enough for the contributions that he has made to our program over the past four years,” Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery said in the university press release.

“He was a valuable teammate on one NIT and two NCAA Tournament teams, all while overcoming three major surgeries over the last six years. Cordell is beloved by Hawkeye Nation and he has my complete support in the coming months during this transition.”

Off the court, Pemsl slipped up a few times. He was arrested in September for drunk driving. He was arrested again in February for driving with a revoked license, which resulted from the drunk driving arrest.
