Hawkeye Guard C.J. Fredrick Making Progress with Foot Injury

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The new week is starting with some potential good news on the Iowa men’s basketball front. Freshman C.J. Fredrick is progressing from a stress reaction in his foot.

The guard missed the last two and half games with the issue. Coach Fran McCaffery said during a Monday morning press conference that he could be available for Tuesday’s game at Northwestern (7 p.m. CT, BTN).

“It’s hard on him,” McCaffery said. “He’s trying to do some things and see how it feels. He shot a little bit (Sunday); didn’t do much. But we’ll see how he is (Tuesday).”

McCaffery said last Tuesday that if the Hawkeyes needed to shut down Fredrick (6-3, 195) for the season, they would do it. He followed up on Thursday by saying the situation didn’t look good.

It’s a tricky injury. A stress reaction is a swelling within the bone and MRIs don’t reveal everything going on in there. The injury could progress to a break, but it also could heal. And recovery comes with a varying degree of timetables.

“I think he’ll come back at some point (this season),” McCaffery said. “If it’s Tuesday…it’s literally day to day. So, if he has a bad day, then he won’t (play). He has good days. If he does play, we’ll see how it goes from there. It’s just going to be like that probably for the rest of the season.”

Fredrick, who red shirted last season, started all 13 games in which he’s played this year. He averaged 10.3 points, third best on the team. He was shooting 23 of 46 (50.0 percent) on three-pointers. His outside shooting and defense have been what Iowa’s missed most.
