The Hawkeye Nation staff returns for another season of picking college football games, for better or worse. Each week Jon Miller, Rob Howe, David Schwartz and newcomer Jack Bacon will select winners of six contests against the spread.

STANDINGS

Jon Miller 3-3/20-22

Rob Howe 4-2/20-22

David Schwartz 4-2/19-23

Jack Bacon 1-5/19-23

Here’s this week’s lineup:

Purdue (+17) at Iowa

Rob Howe: I wouldn’t touch this game with real money. I don’t trust either team enough to invest. But for this exercise, I will take 17 points after watching Iowa offense score 15 the last two weeks. Yes. I know Michigan and Penn State are better than Purdue. Still.

PICK: Purdue

Jack Bacon: I’m very confident that Iowa will this game. The outcome may never be in doubt. But I just don’t see the Iowa offense putting up enough points to win by 17 right now. That’s especially true if Rondale Moore is back to keep the Boilermakers from being shut out (though Coach Brohm said Monday that he wasn’t “real optimistic” about that happening).

PICK:  Purdue

David Schwartz: Are we sure Iowa can even score 17? Purdue plus the points.

Pick: Purdue

Jon Miller I think Iowa wins this game, but Jeff Brohm has strategized so, so well against Iowa the past two seasons in Boilermaker wins that I am not comfortable throwing the points. Iowa wins, but Purdue covers.

Pick: Purdue

Indiana (-5) at Maryland

RH: No doubt in my mind that Indiana is the better team here. I’m just not sure it’s five points better in a game that will feature very little defense.

Pick: Maryland

JB: Is there a Big Ten football team you think less about than Indiana? I’ll go with Hoosiers, just because they’re coming in with the momentum of a Rutgers shutout and the Terrapins were blown out by Purdue last week.

Pick: Indiana

DS: Whatever Maryland thought it had to start the season is long gone. Indiana minus the five on the road.

Pick: Indiana

JM: Maryland has been a train wreck as of late…which worries me here. Is Indiana ready to take a step forward and win as a road favorite? I am not confident here.

Pick: Indiana

Oregon (-2.5) at Washington

RH: I think the Huskies win this game outright. I’m pretty confident in that. And with the way I’m picking game this season, that should signal you to go the other way.

Pick: Washington

JB: I think Oregon is the better team and expect them to win by more than a field goal.

Pick: Oregon

DS: The Ducks are rolling, but playing at Washington is no joke. I don’t feel good about this, but Washington plus the points.

JM: Oregon is a better program right now, but this is a tough road assignment. Still, I will throw the points and take the Ducks

Pick: Oregon

Baylor (+3.5) at Oklahoma State

RH: I’m not buying the Bears.

Pick: Oklahoma State

JB: Baylor is undefeated, and while they haven’t played a very tough schedule, I don’t think that will change against Oklahoma State. I’ll take them with that spread.

Pick: Baylor

DS: Former Baylor head coach Art Briles is in trouble yet again. Blah. OSU minus the points.

Pick: Oklahoma State

JM: Oklahoma State, only because they are at home.

Pick: Oklahoma State

Michigan (+7.5) at Penn State

RH: The two opponents we’ve seen the last two weeks. In that window, the Nittany Lions showed they are better. While that’s a lot of points, I will throw them.

Pick: Penn State

JB: I wasn’t incredibly impressed with either of these teams in their wins over Iowa, but I think both defenses are legit. Penn State wins the quarterback matchup, add a couple points for their electric home field advantage and I think they cover.

Pick: Penn State

DS: I’m imaging the two teams meeting at midfield before the game, sharing a few laughs about defending Iowa’s offense. “OK, OK get this … this one time our coach was, like, OK boys it’s third and eight, watch the Hawks throw it two yards short of the sticks. And then it actually happened! Hahahahahaha.” Penn State and lay the points.

Pick: Penn State

JM: Michigan’s offense is not good..Penn State’s front seven is the best in the league. But this is a lot of points. I think Penn State wins, but I will take the points because of The Hook.

Pick: Michigan

Iowa State (-6) at Texas Tech

RH: I’m buying the Cyclones.

Pick: Iowa State

JB: The Cyclones have been putting up points the last couple of weeks, and I think they’ll have enough to win by seven against the Red Raiders.

Pick: Iowa State

DS: The Red Raiders are never as good in real life as they are in my head. ISU looked strong last week. I’ll go Cyclones minus the points on the road.

Pick: Iowa State

JM: I have been rolling with the Clones all year. It has worked, by and large.

Pick: Iowa State
