Hawkeye O-Lineman Tristan Wirfs Headed to NFL

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa junior offensive lineman Tristan Wirfs announced via social media on Tuesday night that he was forgoing his final college season to enter the NFL Draft.

The Mount Vernon (IA) native joined fellow Hawkeye classmates Geno Stone, A.J. Epenesa and Toren Young in declaring for professional football. The latter two also announced their decisions on Tuesday.

Wirfs became the first true freshman to start at offensive tackle during Kirk Ferentz’s 21 seasons as head coach. He started all 33 games in which he was available once he jumped into the first string. He was one of two freshman named to the team’s leadership group.

The Big Ten named Wirfs its Offensive Lineman of the Year for 2019. The Football Writers Association of America named him a first-team all-American and he landed on the AP’s second team.

Most mock drafts predict Wirfs to go in the first round of April’s draft.

It’s the second year in a row the Hawkeyes have lost four underclassmen to the draft. Last season, tight ends T.J. Hockenson and Noah Fant, were chosen in the first round. Anthony Nelson and Amani Hooker heard their names in Round 4.
