Hawkeyes Rise to 14th in Three Top 25 Polls

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa spent its first of two idle weeks this season getting players healthy and looking for areas to improve. The Saturday off also turned out benefitting it in the Top 25 rankings.

The Hawkeyes found out Sunday they sit at No. 14 in the Associated Press, the Coaches and FWAA-NFF Super 16 Polls. They improved to 3-0 with last Saturday’s 18-17 victory at Iowa State.

Iowa rose four spots in the AP and Coaches’ rankings this week. It was receiving votes in the FWAA-NFF Super 16 last week, checking in at 20th. It’s the highest AP ranking since being No. 13 on Sept. 11. 2016.

Proponents of doing away with Cyclone series leaned on last week’s rankings as evidence for doing so. The Hawkeyes moved up only one spot in the AP and stayed at No. 18 in the Coaches. However, none of the teams ahead of them in the previous week’s ratings lost.

This week was different. Utah, Michigan, UCF and Texas A&M, all of whom were ranked ahead of Iowa, lost.

The Hawkeyes finished last season at No. 25 in the AP. The last time they ended a campaign ranked higher than they are now was ’15 when they were No. 9.

Iowa plays host to Middle Tennessee State (1-2) on Saturday (11 a.m. CT, ESPN2) before facing two teams in the AP Top 25. It begins with a meeting at No. 20 Michigan on Oct. 5 before returning home for a matchup with No. 12 Penn State on Oct. 12.

The only other contest against a program currently ranked comes on Nov. 9 at No.8 Wisconsin.
