HN TV: Gary Barta Talks About Gary Dolphin Suspension

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa athletic director Gary Barta addressed the two-game suspension of play-by-play radio voice Gary Dolphin for the first time with the media Friday night. The Hawkeyes played host to Wisconsin in the Big Ten basketball opener.

Dolphin was caught on air being critical of the basketball team and junior Maishe Dailey. He thought his mic was off.

Barta announced the suspension on Wednesday. In the university press release, he stated their were “ongoing tensions” with the basketball program and Dolphin. Coach Fran McCaffery said on Thursday that he did have issues with Iowa’s radio voice.

Barta would not reveal what the “ongoing tensions” were and said he didn’t handle that part of the issue behind closed doors because it needed to be made public. He said they’d been working on the problem before Dolphin’s comments the other night.

Barta talked about the public backlash from the suspension and why he thinks the principle parties will be able to move forward from these tensions.
