IOWA CITY, Iowa – A number of Iowa fans have been wondering why Iowa receiver Oliver Martin isn’t playing more. Tuesday, here at the football complex, position coach Kelton Copeland shared his thoughts.

“Everybody wants Oliver to play right now, and it’s kind of unfair,” he said.

Here are his complete thoughts on the situation:

Martin prepped at Iowa City West, where he was ranked a four-star recruit by Rivals and 247. He chose Michigan over his hometown Hawkeyes.

Martin caught a touchdown pass in a season-opening win against Miami, raising already high expectations for him outside the program. His opportunities have been scarce this month.

It looked like Martin might see more time Saturday against Northwestern after it was announced that leading receiver Brandon Smith would be out with an injury. Martin played two snaps, both running plays, in a 20-0 win.

Iowa moved backup Tyrone Tracy into Smith’s starting X spot in Evanston. He joined Nico Ragaini and Ihmir Smith-Marsette in receiving the most of the reps. Copeland said Tuesday that the Hawkeyes could continue on with three wideouts taking most of the game snaps until Smith returns.
