RB Toren Young Forgoing Final Season at Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa running back Toren Young announced Tuesday that he was leaving the program with one year of eligibility remaining. Contacted by HN, the Wisconsin product clarified that he’s entering the NFL Draft.

Young joined safety Geno Stone and defensive end A.J. Epenesa, who announced his decision earlier Tuesday, in forgoing their senior seasons in college. Offensive lineman Tristan Wirfs expected to announce his decision to join them sometime before Friday’s deadline.

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz brought Young to Big Ten Media Days in Chicago last summer, a special honor for an underclassman. Young then served as a captain this season. He was one of two freshmen in his class to be part of the team’s leadership committee.

Young rushed for 432 yards and a touchdown on 81 carries this season, starting one game (Wisconsin). For his Hawkeye career, he totaled 1,262 yards and eight scores on 262 attempts.

True freshman Tyler Goodson took over as the team’s starting running back in November. Last month, Iowa signed two running backs in the 2020 recruiting class, one of whom, Gavin Williams from West Des Moines Dowling Catholic, will be enrolling next week.

Senior (in ’20) Mekhi Sargent, junior Ivory Kelly-Martin, sophomore Samson Evans and redshirt freshman Shadrick Byrd are the other scholarship running backs on the roster.
