Report: Joe Wieskamp Going Through NBA Draft Process

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Jeff Goodman from WatchStadium.com reported Thursday that Iowa freshman wing Joe Wieskamp would be testing the NBA Draft process.

Iowa confirmed it later in the day.

“My dream has always been to play in the NBA,” Wieskamp said in a statement. “I want to do everything that I can to turn that dream into a reality whenever that may be. I am excited to gain feedback and learn from this process.”

Wieskamp (6-6, 205) started all 35 games as a Hawkeye freshman. The Muscatine product ranked fourth on the team in scoring (11.1 PPG) and second in rebounding (4.9 RPG). He shot 48.8 percent from the field, 42.4 from on three-pointers and 76.7 from the line.

“Joe should take advantage of this opportunity and we fully support his decision,” Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery said in the statement. “This rule is a positive one for those in pursuit of their professional dreams. We have had players in the past go through the process, all of whom found it beneficial in gathering information through workouts and interviews from NBA personnel. We will assist Joe throughout the process.”

College underclassmen can seek feedback from the NBA and sign with an agent while still being able to return to school. They can only receive transportation, lodging and meals related to meeting with the agent or conducting workouts with NBA teams.

Players must withdraw their names from the NBA Draft by May 29 if going back to college. The exception would be for the 60 athletes invited to the scouting combine. They can return to school if they go undrafted.
