Four years ago, Iowa dipped into Newark (NJ) Weequahic High for a prospect late in the recruiting process. Things turned out pretty well with running back Akrum Wadley.

The Hawkeyes are hoping the good fortune continues with fellow Indian, Ihmir Smith-Marsette, who signed with them on Wednesday. The speedy receiver officially visited to Iowa two weeks ago and at Minnesota this past weekend. Sunday, he announced a verbal commitment to the Gophers but then backed off of that.

“Iowa was where I felt most comfortable and it felt like I could make it my home,” Smith-Marsette said.

Smith-Marsette (6-1, 160) verbally committed to Rutgers last month. Earlier this month, he announced he was de-committing from the Scarlet Knights. Then, he Tweeted a commitment to Minnesota on Sunday during his official visit. It was not something he wanted to do.

“Pressure really was it. That’s how I felt,” he said.

Smith-Marsette told HN that he felt pressure from the Gophers coaches to commit on his visit. After returning home to New Jersey and thinking about it, he decided that he preferred Iowa.

NJ.com reports that Smith-Marsette runs the 400-meter hurdles in 53.7 seconds and is the Emerging Elite section record holder in the 110-meter hurdles, as he posted a time of 13.97 seconds in June. The site also states that he is the distant cousin of rapper/actress Queen Latifah.
