BCS Breakdown

October 19, 2009

Written by Jon Miller

The first BCS Standings for the 2009 football season were released on 10-18-09, and the Iowa Hawkeyes checked in at #6.

It’s the highest ever ‘first ballot’ ranking for the Hawks, and the second highest perch the Hawks have ever flown to in any BCS poll.  Iowa was ranked 5th in the final BCS poll on December 9th, 2002.

The BCS is one-third Coaches Poll (Iowa was 8th), one-third Harris Poll (Iowa was 7th) and one-third Computer Average (Iowa was 3rd).

With regards to the computers, they take an average of six polls:  Anderson & Hester, Billingsley, Colley Matrix, Massey, Sagarin & Wolfe.

They then throw out the high & low ranking for each team, and average the remaining four computers.

Here is how Iowa’s ranking broke down, by computer ranking:

Here is how the Top Seven looks:

  1. Florida (.9886)
  2. Alabama (.9526)
  3. Texas (.8911)
  4. Boise State (.8083)
  5. Cincinnati (.7870)
  6. Iowa (.7869)
  7. USC (.7695)

I picked the top seven to show you the gap in the points between Iowa and the teams above them and the team right below them.

What you see is that Iowa was one ten-thousandth of a point behind Cincinnati for 5th place and breathing down the neck of Boise State for fourth.  If Iowa would win this coming week at Michigan State, I am of the opinion they will move to 4th in next week’s poll as Boise State plays Hawaii and Cincinati plays Louisville.  The computers will not like either of those teams from a strength of schedule standpoint, and that will likely tip the balance with Iowa moving past Cincinnati, at the least.

Penn State came in 13th in this poll, but it wasn’t because of the computers.  The Nits were ranked 11th in both human polls and 17 in the computer polls, a six-position variance.  The biggest gap between the ‘humans’ and the computers was BYU; they rank 16 in both human polls but 25th in the computer polls.

Ohio State is 19th, with Wisconsin checking in at #21.  Arizona is 22 due to the computers ranking the Wildcats 14th.  Arizona was 37th in the Harris poll and 40th in the Coaches poll this week.
