Cost of Lost Opportunities

Last year’s Iowa football regular season, a 7-5 finish, was not what anyone expected.  Not locally and not nationally and not in the Iowa locker room.

It was a lost opportunity, to be sure…and when you are Iowa, you just cannot afford to have those.  You must seize the day when the chance is there to seize it, or there are painful ramifications…

Here is one such ramification.  ABC/ESPN announced today that it has selected seven Big Ten games for its 2011 prime time lineup…and not one of those is a game involving the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Wisconsin lived up to expectations last year, in fact they exceeded expectations.  For doing that, they landed four prime time games this year…more great exposure for their program on top of the great exposure they received last year by living up to and exceeding expectations.

None of this is to say that Iowa would have chosen the record they wound up with.  It’s college football and it’s why you play the games.  However, it’s certainly one of the ‘bummer’ factors of being off the radar.  If Wisconsin lives up to the preseason hype they are getting this year, and I think they are overrated for what they are getting, it moves their program into a different position.  Iowa and Wisconsin are programs on par with one another right now and they bump heads on the recruiting trail all of the time…you have to keep up and when you get there, you can’t have the bottom fall out, as it did last November.

Penn State is also without a prime time slot…however, every Big Ten team will play in at least one prime time game this year, and the Big Ten Network will be where that happens if not on ESPN/ABC.  My guess is Iowa’s game at Penn State will be Iowa’s prime time game.  Mike Hlas of The Gazette thinks it will be Northwestern at Iowa…
