Fallbacks Good to Iowa

The term ‘Fallback recruit’ isn’t necessarily nice and tidy, and some folks cringe at the mention.

What it means is when you get a commitment from a player in the last few days leading up to signing day that is not someone that a great deal of quality football programs were involved with. It means that you offered them a scholarship late in the process after a more highly regarded player chose to go elsewhere.

Whether you like the term or not, or want to use a different lexicon, that’s fine.

However, ‘Fallback Recruits’ have been good to the Iowa football program through the years.

-Micah Hyde committed to Iowa on January 25th, 2009, less than two weeks before signing day. Iowa was the only BSC conference program to offer Hyde
-In 2008, William Lowe committed on 1/28, with Steve Bigach on February 3rd. Bigach is a name to watch out for this spring on the defensive line and Lowe has already seen the field.
-Iowa pulled Allen Reisner away from UNI on 2/3/07 and landed Mike Daniels on 1/29/07 as he was ticketed to Villanova.
-In 2006, Iowa offered Brett Morse late in the process, believing what they were told by folks close to Morse: He will make your team better.
-In 2004, Brandon Myers was headed to UNI before Iowa offered at the 11th hour. He is now a member of the Oakland Raiders
-In 2002, Mike Elgin, Jovon Johnson and Clinton Solomon were all early February commits to Iowa, with all being late offers.

So while some of the names you see sign LOI’s on Wednesday have only just come into view for all but the most fanatical followers of Iowa football recruiting, don’t dismiss the contributions they may be able to make to the program down the line. Iowa’s is a program that has done quite a lot with some of these ‘Fallbacks’.
