INITIAL REACTION: The offensive line starters look like a load…and their backups are not chopped liver, either. This might be of the ‘deepest’ offensive lines of the Ferentz era in the form of most players capable of being solid contributors. This offense has the chance to score 30 a game, and this line is going to be the key.

On defense, it’s going to be a fascinating first few games. This is the least experience Iowa has had in it’s DL two deep since 2005 when it started freshmen Mitch King and Matt Kroul at tackle and sophomores Ken Iwebema and Bryan Mattison at end. I remain cautiously optimistic about what they can do (it’s better than being cautiously pessimistic), and the rotation is going to expand from what we have seen the past few years. Dominic Alvis is someone Norm Parker has been raving about for the past 18 months…his inclusion here makes sense along those lines. Another ‘motor’ guy on the defensive line.

Hyde starts the fall two-deep where he ended the spring; at free safety. I think a green free safety can cause more damage for Iowa’s defense than a green corner, so this is a good move to put a veteran defensive back at a more important position (in Hyde). Iowa rarely asks its corners to play man coverage, so they usually have safety help over the top. They may be able to let Shaun Prater play a little man coverage this year, given his experience, and shade Hyde over to Castillo’s side a bit.
