Hawkeye Mashup

Hawkeye Nation

Let’s lead off with an item after my own heart, packed with statistical analysis and charts and so many more things that grab my attention.

The folks over at BlackHeartGoldPants put together a comparison, by where they looked at the BCS conference programs, where their recruiting classes ranked, star rankings, etc, and then applied the NFL draft as compared the two lists to statistically prove which colleges give prospects the best chance of making it to the NFL.

The results were surprising and very favorable to Iowa. In fact, high school football prospects DOUBLE their chance to make the NFL if they go to USC, Ohio State or Iowa.

If you have ten minutes where you can really focus on this article, it’s going to be worth your time. If you have five minutes, do it. If you only have two, scan it and you will find the payoffs for doing so. This is such a well done rundown…there is even something for those of you that like to trade barbs with ISU fans…ISU brought in talent at a level just below Iowa’s, yet their ‘success’ at player development, in an NFL parlance, is near the bottom of the 66 BCS teams.

The author of the article also created a formula that predicts wins based on recruiting rankings and shows the programs that are doing the best with what they get in terms of wins and those that are not. Again, Iowa, Ohio State and USC rank quite favorably.

This might be my favorite article of 2011, but then again I am a stat geek…

NFL Draft Scraps: Iowa has six players drafted for the second year in a row…and for the second year in a row, this was tops in the Big Ten. Now, Cornhusker fans will say ‘Wait a second, we had seven!’. Well, yes you did. But, you aren’t in the Big Ten yet. By the way, the six players drafted from Iowa was the 5th best by any one school in the nation, and Tom Kakert of Rivals tweeted yesterday that Iowa’s two year total of 12 players is the third best in the nation over the past two years. USC leads the way with 16 and Florida had 13.

Nebraska AD Tom Osborne recently said that he expects Iowa and Nebraska will eventually become a rivalry. In other news, scientists have recently discovered that water is wet. (no, this isn’t a comment on the article, rather Osborne’s statement. No kiddin, Tom?)

Optimism Abounds for Iowa Hoops | Scott Dochterman of the Gazette wrote this one, with quotes from Matt Gatens and Bryce Cartwright. I certainly agree..I have thought a lot about next season over the past few days, something I have not done in early May for a long time.

Former Hawkeye tight end Marv Cook is on this year’s ballot for the College Football Hall of Fame. I can still recall watching Cook playing high school sports for West Branch, as we share that home town. Cook was one of my first ‘sports idols’ if you will and he was a heck of a Hawkeye. The fact he is now a traitor, as he is the head coach of the Regina Regals, a big rival of West Branch, is immaterial. Love ya ‘Duck’!
