When Joshua DeBerry visited Iowa last week, something special stood out to him.

“I liked that the players really liked it there,” the Warren (MI) De La Salle cornerback said.

He watched the Hawkeyes practice, met with the coaches and toured campus. He received a scholarship offer from them on Feb. 23.

“I really liked it. It’s one of my top schools. My top schools are Iowa State, Iowa, Kentucky, and Northwestern,” he said.

DeBerry visited Iowa State a few days after visiting Iowa. He stopped at Northwestern before seeing the Hawkeyes and picked up his offer on that stop.

He saw the Hawkeyes several days before they held their pro day. He liked hearing about their track record of developing players.

“The history of NFL players that they have there is impressive,” he said.

DeBerry (6-0, 165) met with head coach Kirk Ferentz, defensive coordinator Phil Parker and assistant D-Line coach Kelvin Bell.

“We just talked about what my future could be there and they were telling me all about Iowa. Also, that I could do some special teams there,” he said.

The staff told DeBerry that they like the way he plays and feel he would fit well in the program.

DeBerry is taking his time with the recruiting process, trying to get comfortable with the schools pursuing him.

“I’m not sure when I’ll be committing,” he said.

The 247 Network ranks DeBerry as a three-star recruit. It sees him as the No. 20 player in Michigan for the 2019 class and the 67th best cornerback nationally.
