Hawkeyes Offer Freshman Lineman

I have been covering the Iowa football program since 1999 and for most of that time I have had more than a casual interest in recruiting; that has been a professional interest, too.

Which is why I can say with confidence that Iowa’s choosing to offer a freshman football player is a first, at least from my recollection. I could be wrong; after all, I just turned 40 and the mind may not be what it used to be.

However I just can’t remember a football player this young getting an offer from Iowa. Basketball players? Yes. Jeff Horner, Ricky Davis, Dean Oliver, Chris Street…those four received offers as freshmen or sophomores in high school.

However, Brian Allen, a lineman from Illinois, takes the cake as the youngest football offer.

He does have an Iowa connection; former Hawkeye lineman Mike Jones is one of his high school coaches. Read the linked item above for more details…

Matt Gatens and Bryce Cartwright will play on a USA All Star team this summer. “They have accepted invitations to participate and represent the United States on an East Coast All-Star Team that will compete in the Four Nations Cup held in Tallinn, Estonia in August. Cartwright (6-1, 180) and Gatens (6-5, 215) will depart for in late July for Williamsport, Pa. for a two-day training camp July 31-Aug. 1. After spending the second of August traveling to Estonia, the team will have an opportunity to go on a sightseeing tour on Aug. 3.”

It’s been a while since any Hawkeyes have had a chance like this…here is to a successful and healthy trip…

Iowa Women’s Basketball coach Lisa Bluder has signed a contract extension that will keep her at Iowa until 2018.

“The University of Iowa is an outstanding place to coach women’s basketball,” Bluder said. “I have spent my entire basketball career in this state and feel very fortunate to be the head coach at Iowa. I would like to thank the administration for showing their support in me and my staff with this extension. The contract extension reflects my desire to keep the Iowa women’s basketball program competing at a high level for many years.”

Bluder has done an exceptional job while at Iowa…routinely making the NCAA tournament and often overcoming significant injuries to key players to get there.

The Iowa golf program is going to get a new indoor practice facility. That is causing a stir, including from some homeowners who will now see this structure out the backside of their homes. One of those homeowners? ‘Karen Baker, who is an associate professor in the dentistry school and also is a member of Presidential Committee on Athletes.’

While I certainly can appreciate Baker’s concern, the irony here is a bit rich, isn’t it?

This from twitter “@TravisHines21: Mike Meyer is your 2011 Ben Trickey Scholarship award winner, awarded to an Iowa walk-on.” I don’t know if this is accurate or not but it’s not a stretch to think Mike Meyer earned a scholarship. He had a very solid year as a true freshman walk on kicker. He was 14-17 in field goals this year. Remember that guy named Nate Kaeding? He was 14-22 as a freshman at Iowa. The next three years he missed 4, 3 and 1 field goal attempts. Let’s hope Meyer trends the same.

David Barrent was an offensive lineman for West Des Moines Valley High School a few years back. He had committed to Iowa, but then changed his mind and committed and signed with Michigan State. It was about this time that Iowa was going through some off the field negative publicity due to the decisions of Abe Satterfield and Cedric Everson…it was quite a hot topic. On Tuesday, Barrent decided to hang up his cleats and give up the sport, due to chronic back injuries, according to KCCI’s Andy Garman and WOI’s John Walters.
