Recruiting Home Stretch

National Signing Day.  Yes, capitalized.

It’s always the first Wednesday in February and this year we don’t have to wait very long for that first Wednesday, as it will be February 2nd.  The Iowa football team has around 20 verbal commitments so far for their class of 2011 and they have enough scholarships to likely give the full 25.  Some big names are still out there, being courted by Iowa and strongly considering Iowa.  Here are some of them, with their recruiting profile pages from both Scout and Rivals linked so you can take a look at their measurables and offers.

Jordan Lomax, Defensive Back (DeMatha High School)  Scout | Rivals :  Lomax had been committed to Virginia for around nine months, but that is no longer the case.  According to Rob Howe of HawkeyeInsider.com, Iowa commit Quinton Alston made a post on Lomax’s wall asking him how things were going.  Lomax replied, “It’s Hawkeye Time.” Make of that what you will, but it looks pretty good for Iowa.  Hopefully that also lends itself to more good news for Iowa out of DeMatha…

Darian Cooper, Defensive Lineman (DeMatha High School) Scout | Rivals :  Cooper visited this past weekend and tweeted last night that the Iowa coaching staff had been by his house to see him yesterday.  He also just hopped on a plane this morning, heading for a weekend recruiting visit to Michigan.  It seems like its down to the Hawkeyes, Georgia Tech, Michigan State & Wolverines for Cooper, and perhaps having teammates Marcus Coker and Lomax at Iowa could be the factor that tips the scales for the Hawkeyes?  I had someone tell me yesterday that I have known for a decade as it relates to Hawkeye bits and pieces, saying that the coaching staff feels that Cooper has a chance to play as a true freshman and that speech pathology is something his mother wants for him to get involved with.  IF that is accurate, Iowa has another thing going for it; it’s the #1 school in the nation in that field of study.

Another DeMatha prospect, Cyrus Kouandjo, visited Iowa this past weekend as well and told Scout.com that Iowa ‘Felt like home,’ in addition to a few more positive comments.  He is regarded as one of the best offensive linemen in the nation and while most feel he ends up at Alabama, where his brother plays, Iowa may have closed some ground last week.

Earlier this week, we posted that Remound Wright, a running back from Ft Wayne, Indiana was going to make a visit this weekend.  Rob Howe is reporting that Jamal Overton will visit Iowa this weekend, too.  He is as defensive back from Pomona, CA and his cousin is married to Bob Sanders, who has told him a thing or two about the Hawkeyes.  Howe also reports the Maryland defensive back Jeremiah Hendy has Iowa in his final four, too.

This recruiting class might already be the second best ‘on paper’ class of the Ferentz era.  With some key commitments over the next five days, it might actually exceed the Class of 2005 on balance, and of course on paper.  Football games are not played on paper, but this is an impressive looking crop. one that Rivals.com feels is among the 30 best in the nation at this point.
