Ross: Hawkeye Family Ties

It is a fact that nobody can make fun of your brother except you. If you have a brother, you know exactly what I mean. If you don’t have a brother, you’re here reading this article, so you’re a Hawkeye fan, and you can understand. We’re all a part of the same family. Our Hawkeye family.

When somebody is critical of the Hawkeyes, I bet one of your first thoughts is “Is this person a Hawk fan?”

You’re essentially asking yourself “Is this person a member of the family?” and “are they allowed to say these things about something I love?”

Family members can say what they want. However, if you’re not blood, if you don’t bleed black and gold like my family, you don’t get to take the same liberties as me. We are like a family. A large Hawkeye family. With some weird cousins.

Like every large family, we have members that will NEVER be happy. They are like our old Aunt that will complain about too much mustard in the Potato Salad, even when the party is great. Ignore her. She’s a loser. Then there are the rest of us. Enjoying our time. We’ve all been a little testy lately, but that’s because we remember how fun the party was just a few short years ago.

There have been some things to be upset about recently. We all know the list. Have the last few years been what we expected? No. The win totals have not been as high as we all hoped they would’ve been. In other words, the party has not been as fun as we had thought it should’ve been. Nevertheless, things are not nearly as bad as some others have tried to paint it.

I heard a conversation the other day asking if Iowa was a “winning program?”. That is silly. Of Course it is. 11 of the past 14 seasons have ended with winning records. That is a chunk of time. I think it’s time to start pushing back a little!

So let’s sprinkle some optimism on this fan base of ours! Let’s also make sure we’re on the same page. Because we all deal with non-Hawk fans that want to see you’re critical thinking turn to self-loathing. They’re called “trolls” on the internet. They’re called “jerks” in person.

I think it’s about time to remember it’s still ok to puff your chest out just a little bit when you’re talking about the Hawkeyes. Remember that Iowa is still the premiere program in this state, hands down. Remember that Iowa is coming off back-to-back January Bowl Games, winning records in 6 of the last 7 years, and nobody is happy with that level of success. We demand more!!!!

Moreover, there’s evidence of better things to come!

Did you see the video of the new facilities?  Incredible!

Kirk Ferentz job is not in jeopardy right now. Frankly, I hope this is as close as we come to talking about a “hot-seat”. But he knows that people are talking. People are wondering if he’s worth the money and how many wins he has to earn to keep himself off the seat.

I am willing to bet on Kirk Ferentz this year. The schedule is as manageable as it will ever be, and you don’t need to know Ferentz personally to know he’s a competitive guy with some pride on the line this year. I’ll take Ferentz in that fight. He knows he’s fighting out of that corner!

Kirk Ferentz is going to be on that Coaches Hall of Fame wall in that video. He deserves to be. He’s second all-time in both games coached and games won, behind only Hayden Fry on both lists of course. Think about that for a second. He’s a Hall of Fame coach for our University. That’s the guy I’m pulling for. That’s the guy I’m excited to see.

Yeah, I’m disappointed in the outcome the past few years. And yes, I’ve been more critical of the program than I’ve ever been as an adult. But I’m only critical because I know how fun the party can be.

I’m excited for this 2015 Football season! My expectations are tempered, but I’m excited! A new quarterback feels like a new toy. I hope that Kirk lets us find out what that new toy can really do. The facilities upgrade is overdue, but it’s here, and it’s awesome! A hall of fame coach might see part of his legacy on the line, and show everybody why he’s paid that much money.

And if he doesn’t, the University has shown a willingness to put up the money that is needed for coaches’ salaries and facilities to be nationally relevant.

Yeah! That’s what I needed hear! Even if things don’t get better right away, I really do believe they are committed to winning long term. They have seen this past decade the amazing things you can do for the entire athletic department when you’re Football team is pulling in the money that accompanies 10 win seasons.

I love the Hawkeyes. Kind of like my brother. And just like my brother, they can beat me up. Abuse me emotionally. Take my money. Act like they don’t want me to be around… They can do all of that. And I’ll still look up to them. I’ll still love every minute I get to share with them. And I’ll want to fight you if say anything bad about them.
