ROSS: Two Weeks In

Well, I hate to be this guy, but…. I told you so!

Do you still think it’s the “same old Ferentz?”

Two games in. We’ve seen two fake field goals, two drives for the endzone to end the first half and a Flea-Flicker.

Ferentz said after the Illinois State game that the next time he tried a fake FG and it didn’t work, fans wouldn’t be so supportive.

He was right. Some fans were upset with the fake to end the fist half. Not me. This is exactly the type of mentality most of us have been asking for. Ferentz went so far out of the box that it shocked some fans. I loved it. The coaching staff showed an amazing confidence with that call. It was their way of saying “we know we’re going to move the ball and score in the second half. We don’t need 3 points now”.

The other side of fake FG’s in consecutive games is this: Every team on the schedule will have to take some time, maybe an hour, maybe  Every team on the schedule will have to take some time, maybe an hour, maybe 10 minutes, talking about and preparing for the fake. That’s 10 minutes that those teams and coaches aren’t preparing for CJ Beathard.

Speaking of CJ… What a game!

CJ Beathard was the best player on the field in Ames. He showed all the things that we’ve been hoping to see since he showed up on campus. He showed great agility, an ability to break tackles and stay on his feet, he was improvising broken plays into game breaking plays, and putting passes in windows that looked like NFL throws.

Oddly, the best play he made, may have been the acrobatic lunge to get the ball out of the endzone and prevent a safety. He followed that up with two plays that we haven’t seen an Iowa quarterback make in several years. That’s what we were waiting for.

The injuries to Ott and Daniels are both concerning. Drew is the cornerstone of that Defensive Line, and there’s no doubt the Defense is better with him in. But Parker Hesse did an outstanding job of filling Ott’s shoes after the injury. The dropoff to the “next-man-in” is not that drastic. Ott’s wrist will heal, and he’ll be back to full strength in a couple of weeks.

Daniels injury concerns me a little more. Ankle injuries with Running Backs are rarely a one-time deal. They tend to linger and effect the Backs running style. LeShun looked like he was primed for a huge year. Ed Podolak even predicted a 1,000 yard season for Daniels after the first week. That doesn’t look likely now. Jordan Canzeri will get the bulk of the carries, and he’s never been built for that type of workload. While there is little to no dropoff from Daniels to Canzeri, it could be an issue late in games if Canzeri is wearing down.

Pitt is coming into an environment at Kinnick that they haven’t experienced in their previous trips. The night game, the Black and Gold Spirit Game, and the energy of the fanbase should be electric!

Keep your eyes open on Saturday. We haven’t seen the last of the new Kirk Ferentz. Something will surprise you!
