Iowa was one of the six teams to make the finals. The others are Illinois, Michigan, Penn State, Oklahoma, and Stanford.

There are only 17 programs of which 7 are in the B1G, 2 from the PAC12, 3 Military Academies, 1 from the Big 12. I didn't realize there were so few.

    Trade out gymnastics for hockey.

Trade baseball for hockey. I love baseball, but we have a higher chance of succeeding in gymnastics and hockey than baseball.

true. esp with the weather up here and how historically terrible the Big10 is in baseball. hockey would be a much better regional sport. i personally like baseball more, but i think hockey would be better attended.

Meh, maybe true about gymnastics b/c there are on only 17 teams per eyekwah but that's hard to compare. There are 17 teams for a reason too. Nobody really plays hockey in Iowa that I know of or atleast when I was a kid. I am super biased, I will admit but baseball should stay and on top of that we're the only D1 team in Iowa. We need to figure out how to play later in the season but if that was possible I guess they would be by now..isnt there talk of the BIGten breaking away and starting their season more towards summer time?? I may have made that up but I thought I heard Jack Dahm say that on the radio a couple of weeks ago.

    two things.

    1. Iowa has several high end junior league hockey teams in the state that are full of D1 talent. Wouldn't have to go far at all to recruit. These kids are coming from all over the country, but also have Iowans on their rosters

    2. Moving the baseball season is going to help with the weather, but who would we play? Only the other Big10 teams, because everyone else is done already.

Yeah, that's what they were saying on the radio. Maybe other conferences/teams would jump too. Who knows..probably will never happen but I am pretty sure the Iowa coaches were discussing this.

the state of Iowa and a believe something like Montana are the only "Northern" states that have HS baseball in the summer. most states, like South Dakota for example, have something like AAU summer ball along with spring HS baseball. i have a friend who played some D2 college ball and he said you could tell the kids from Iowa because they were way behind in development as these other states have much longer seasons and therefore much more experience for their players.

    tough situation, no doubt.

edit: added some stuff to clarify. also found this little clip from this article
    http://www.lemarssentinel.com/story/1621106.html

Baseball has a unique tradition in Iowa chronicled in part by W.P. Kinsella's novel "Shoeless Joe," which became the film "Field of Dreams." That tradition is manifested in Iowa's high school baseball program, which, unlike 47 other states, is played as the corn grows during the summer rather than during the spring.

this article is newer. looks like Iowa is the only state now. sorry to turn this into a baseball thread.

Iowa boys show they belong | Perfect Game USA

"And there-in lies the problem for the elite Iowa high school baseball prospects. The Iowa High School Athletic Association offers only a summer season for its member schools, which means a prospect has to decide between playing for his high school team or leaving loyalty to schools, friends, teammates and even communities behind to play on the national travel ball circuit. Iowa is the only state that offers sanctioned high school baseball that doesn't offer a spring season."

Boy we are stubborn. Seems like if every other state is doing it then we should be able to/find a way..it's not like we're the only state that farms. Baseball is miserable when it is cold and windy.

Ha, thanks. I wasnt trying to brag tho, just stating a fact that we aren't complete shat at baseball here in Iowa. We know how to play and can hang. I was by no means a super stud/best player on those teams..not even close but I played with some really talented guys.

    A few thoughts...

    1. Since Ohio State in 1966, the only team NOT from the south or west to win the NCAA Baseball championship was Wichita State in 1989

    2. The United States Hockey League is the top Junior hockey league (under 20, amateur) in north america, and has 5 teams based in Iowa (CR, Dubuque, Waterloo, DM, SC).

And on unrelated note, wonder why the Women's Gymnastics team can't make a run soon. With Shawn Johnson and Gabby Douglas's recent olympic success, you'd think that they'd have an edge in recruiting. Maybe the two could coach the team in the future?

good points on 1 and 2.

on the unrelated note: it's because Gabby and Shawn's coach doesn't work for Iowa. he teaches privately. and while i'm sure he's getting huge coin to do so, Iowa doesn't benefit from that.

I know he teaches privately, I was going more on the lines of "Gabby and Shawn have connections in the state of Iowa, maybe iowa is good for gymnastics."

    A stretch, I know.
