Hate to say it, but Fran's recruiting pretty much stinks.

All those freshman, only Wagner gave a LITTLE bit to the team.

In this day and age of college basketball, if you recruit 5 incoming freshman, and you have to redshirt 2 and the other 3 are glued to the pine, well... It tells us your recruiting stinks.

So with all the experience returning in our starting 5 and one of our top bench players (Woodbury, Uthoff, Gesell, Clemmons, Jok and Uhl), that leaves minutes for players 7-10(?) to be divvied up among 5 incoming freshmen. While I thought Fran should have played the bench more in non-conference games to develop them, there really weren't that many minutes to give to the freshmen when the Big 10 season got underway.

Agreed. Most freshmen who play a lot are big time studs or guys who are filling holes in the roster. I am a little disappointed there weren't more contributions. But it's not as bad as the guy you quoted made it sound.

Frans awful recruiting:

2010 - Future All B1G player (Marble)
2011 - Top 150 player (Ogelsby) All B1G player in White
2012 - Top 50 player, top 100 player (Woody, Gesell)
2013 - Top 125 transfer and All B1G player (Uthoff), All B1G player (Jok)
2014 - Uhl, Baer a walkon who is actually a scholarship level player
2015 - Williams, Moss and Wagner will all be major contributors
2016 - Top 75 player (Cook)
2017 - Top 100 player (Conner)
2018 - Top 50 player (Weiscamp)
2019 - Top 50 player (Patrick)

Recruiting class of 5 players don't stick around, and anyone who thinks that they do doesn't know BB. OSU has lost 4 of its 5 "stud" recruits from last year. Look at how well they did playing for a team that couldn't even make the NCAA tournament:

Grandstaff (4*) 11 MPG 4 PPG
Giddens (4*) 18 MPG 3 PPG
AJ Harris (4*) 13 MPG 3 PPG
Mitchel (3*) 13 MPG 2 PPG

So just stop already.

When 3/5th of the starting 5 pretty much give you ZERO offense at all there should have been PLENTY of chances to get other kids involved, yet fran stuck with the same group the whole year that is 100% his stupid decision making in play!

Was he smart playing those kids until the first part of Feb. when they were ranked #3 in the nation?

I was disappointed the Hutton was transferring, but he has to do what he feels best for him. He definitely is a tremendous athlete and I thought he was going to be a good offensive player, but he was a little undersized. The good news is that he probably didn't feel to good about getting many minutes with the guys that were ahead of him. That could point to Iowa having a pretty good year coming up in basketball. Jok, Williams, Moss, Fleming and Baer were probably all ahead of Hutton. Ellingson didn't appear to have a particularly good year, but who knows about next year.

Don't know about all of them, but the three that left the team recently:

Kyle Meyer averaged 13.2 minutes, 2.4 points and 2.7 rebounds for Houston (22-10) this past year, playing in all 32 games.

Trey Dickerson averaged 4.7 minutes, 0.4 points and 0.4 rebounds for South Dakota (14-18) this past year, playing in 17 games.

Pat Ingram averaged 25.3 minutes, 3.5 points and 1.5 rebounds for Idaho (21-13) this past year, plaing in 25 games.

None really tearing it up and all at lower levels of competition than the Big 10.

Thanks! It appears all 3 of these guys left because they weren't good enough to play in the Big 10 or for Iowa.

Haven't you been vocal about your dissatisfaction of Fran's recruiting in the past?

Hutton isn't a power forward or a center!!! He's 6'5 and he can effectively guard 2s, 3s and some 4s. Now tell me 1 of the guys you listed that are capable of that??
For cripes sake! I think some of you just like to argue because you don't even read the thread to get context, before you chime in!
What the hell are you talking about?

You were the one who said Woody couldn't defend outside... and I was saying your comment was stupid within that context. Dude... you really need to relax. Getting wound up over a discussion on a forum is pretty lame...

If you love him, why did you bring him up out of nowhere and start talking about how bad his perimeter defense was and how many layups he's missed?
I didn't. HawkeyeWalker brought up Woodbury in response to my appraisal of Hutton. Page 4. You can read that and the following response. Woody actually provides what I think Hutton could too. Toughness, Defense and rebounding. But they aren't the same player. Hutton is an explosive athlete that can guard on the perimeter. That's not a knock on Woody! Most 7'0 Centers CAN'T guard perimeter players. And they aren't explosive athletes! The 7'0 Centers that fit that description are 1 and done NBA players. That's why I said it was ridiculous to compare Hutton to Woodbury. Here is HawkeyeWalker's comment with my comment that he quoted, above it.

You just described our starting center from this year, who gets very little love on HN.

Fine. But you didn't bother to see the previous comments and why I said that. Here it is. I"ll include my first description, then the part where HawkeyeWalker tried to bring Woodbury into this.

" He's everything we lacked on this year's team. Tough, nasty kid that plays defense with an attitude. Explosive athlete! I'm sure he sat on the bench and just got more angry with each passing game.
Now I'm ****** off. The kid with the most heart just left the building."

That's the comment that brought Woodbury into the discussion. I most certainly wasn't trying to compare Hutton to Woodbury and responded to HawkeyeWalker by pointing out that Hutton is an explosive athlete as well as being able to defend on the perimeter, so his attempt to compare Hutton's game to Woody, was ridiculous.

If you were paying attention to what was being said from the start, you'd see why I said the things I did.

i don't know. From every video I've seen Hutton looked leaps and bounds better than Fleming, and can do things ahletically that Baer just can't and won't ever be able to do. He looked like he had a decent shot and not horrible handles. I don't see how he wouldn't have played a lot next year unless it's attitude, or he regressed significantly. Bo Ryan wanted him. Think Bo knows talent.

To be fair, Oglesby? Really? Uhls pretty garbage. Baers a walkon for a reason and the 6 freshman this year havent done much. The remaining 4 may still but Wagner was the only one who contributed. Wagners game is limited too. Its a redflag to me when both moss and hutton redshirted but the others didn't.... Who recruited these guys and why did they give up on them so quick? What changed in a year?

Also, Ellingson should be stirring the gatorade and thats about it.

Baer's got talent, basketball IQ, hustle and heart...and a good attitude...and no sense of entitlement. He didn't even complain about paying his own way for 2 years. I would much rather have him than Hutton and/or Fleming. He's actually shown the ability to play at the Big 10 level...something neither of the transfers had done yet.

I'm not trashing Woodbury and have been one of his vocal supporters this year. He plays good post defense, fights for position and rebounds. That part of his game has improved steadily. And it has NOTHING to do with my comment. Someone was trying to draw comparison between my appraisal of Hutton to Woody's game. I simply pointed out the ridiculousness of their comment.

I was that someone, the line I quoted described woody. Not arguing with you.

HawkeyeWalker

I wasn't!!! Somebody else did! I never brought Woody into the thread. Go back to the first 2 pages and you'll see who did.

It was me. And my point is, the quote, verbatim, was praising Hutton from the exact things we got from Woody. That's all I was saying, and I agree with you that those things were pivotal to our success....many disagreed, I didnt.
