Hawkeyes Offer AJ Epenesa

I am not normally interested when Iowa offers football players, especially when those players just finished their freshman year of high school. It’s rare when Iowa does that, but in this instance it’s rare and I am very interested.

The Iowa Hawkeyes have offered sophomore to be defensive end AJ Epenesa, from Edwardsville, Illinois.

If that name rings a bell, it should as his father Epenesa Epenesa played for the Hawkeyes in the 1990’s. I got to know ‘Eppy’ back in the late 1990’s when I lived in Kansas City and his family lived next to one of my lifelong friends.

He was recently named the defensive line MVP of the Chicago NFTC event, an event which included Class of 2015 Five Star DL Jashon Cornell, who Iowa has offered along with Alabama, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State and the rest of the world.

AJ is 6-4/232 and he just finished his freshman year of high school. He moves like a cat and Oklahoma and Michigan are already sniffing around, but Iowa has this in their favor; AJ has been a lifelong Hawkeye. AJ was overcome with emotion when Kirk Ferentz called the family to tell them they wanted him to be a part of the Iowa family.

If he continues his progression, he could wind up being a four or five star defensive lineman before it’s all said and done…and he has two younger brothers.
