Iowa Football Offers Rising ’23 WR Carnell Tate

Like many Illinois high school football players, Carnell Tate was disappointed when the state postponed the fall season until the spring. His spirits have been lifted since September started, however.
The Class of 2023 receiver from Chicago Marist High landed Notre Dame, Michigan and West Virginia scholarship offers during the first three days of the month. Iowa jumped into the mix on Tuesday.
“Picking up an offer form Iowa meant a lot to me. They talked about their interest in me and how my head coach, coach (Ron) Dawczak, speaks highly of me,” Tate told HN.
He likes what he’s heard about the Hawkeyes so far.
“I like their program. I think I’m able to be myself in their program and do what I do best. I like that they’re close to home, but I also haven’t gotten to do my research on the program yet,” Tate said.
The 247 network ranks him as a four-star recruit. The scouting service sees him as the No. 6 receiver nationally in the ’23 Class and the No. 1 player regardless of position in Illinois for the cycle.
Cincinnati, Michigan State and Vanderbilt also have offered Tate (6-2, 175) scholarships. They all came before he started his sophomore year of high school.

He’s looking forward to building a relationship with the Hawkeye staff.
“I haven’t gotten to speak with any of the coaches so far. Through my conversation with coach (Seth) Wallace, I learned he’s a cool guy and is easy to communicate with,” Tate said.
He didn’t grow up rooting for any particular college football program but has followed the Big Ten closely.

“I’m just a do-it-all player. I can go up and get the ball, and I can run crafty routes. I believe any system that throws the ball bets fits my game. I can see my game fitting at Iowa,” he said.
Tate is not rushing through the process. There’s no need to do so with three years of high school remaining.
“I’m just taking recruiting as it comes and I’m not worrying about it too much because I still have time. I would love to see it play out easy and simple,” he said.
