Here is a look at where Iowa ranks in the NCAA and the Big Ten in several key statistical rankings, with some comments towards the bottom of the item.

The first ranking is where Iowa ranks in the NCAA out of 120 teams and the second ranking is among the 12 teams from the Big Ten.

Total Offense: 51st | 6th
Scoring Offense: 23rd | 3rd (37.8 points per game)
Rushing Defense: 55th | 8th
Pass Eff Defense: 86th | 11th
Total Defense: 77th | 10th
Score Defense: 60th | 10th (23.8 points per game allowed)
Net Punting: 6th | 1st
Punt Returns: 55th | 8th
Kickoff Returns: 53rd | 6th
Turnover Margin: T-13 | 2nd
Pass Defense: 91st | 11th
Pass Efficiency: 28th | 3rd
Sacks: T-48 | 4th
TFL’s: T-85 | 7th
Sacks Allowed: T-35 | 4th

-Iowa is 100th in third down conversion percentage defense, 51st on offense

James Vandenberg is 21st in passer efficiency, 3rd in Big Ten
Vandenberg is 25th in total offense and 3rd in Big Ten
Vandenberg is tied for 11th nationally with 10 TD passes
Marvin McNutt is T-33 receptions per game and 3rd in Big Ten
McNutt is 22nd in receiving yards per game and 2nd in Big Ten
Micah Hyde is T-21 in INT’s and T-1 Big Ten

By my reckoning, Iowa has the biggest gap in the Big Ten between its rushing and passing yardage output…Iowa has run for 562 yards and thrown for 1125. That’s almost double the passing yards to rushing yards. It’s close to the same on defense, where teams are nearly doubling their passing yardage output against Iowa. It makes sense considering the four teams Iowa has played thus far and the offenses they have run and I believe Iowa’s secondary is going to continue to get better.

One of the problems putting too much weight in out of conference statistics is the level of competition played by each team is so different. Iowa has played the 10th ranked schedule of any team in the Big Ten according to NCAA stats and the 7th toughest to Sagarin. I tend to look more at Sagarin’s numbers than the NCAA’s numbers in instances like this, given how computer based they are. Here are his strength of schedule rankings for Big Ten teams through 9/24:

-The three teams leading the Big Ten in sacks are not on Iowa’s schedule this year. Current Big Ten total defense ranks of 2,4 and 5 are not on Iowa’s schedule this year.

-Iowa has the 2nd most first downs in the Big Ten, but 12th in opponent first downs.

-Russell Wilson has 11 TD to 1 INT, Vandenberg is 10 to 1..the next nearest Big Ten passer in TD passes is Denard Robinson with 6 and he also has 6 INT.
