IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa athletic director Gary Barta and head coach Kirk Ferentz met with the media on Thursday to discuss the return of Big Ten Football. The conference announced on Wednesday the season would start the weekend of Oct. 23-24 after postponing it last month.

Here are some of the highlights from the Barta and Ferentz press conference:

From Barta –

-The opportunity to test daily was a game changer for this decision.

-Still working through football schedule.

-Return of football will not change decisions on Iowa athletic department employee furloughs and dismissals or the cancelation of the four Hawkeye sports.

-Big Ten still negotiating with companies to find best price on rapid antigen testing. It will be at a yet-to-be determined significant cost says Iowa AD Gary Barta as every student-athlete in all sports will be tested.

-Worries about soft-tissue injuries with players with only five weeks to train before first game.

-Several players have concerns about playing and they could potentially opt out.

-When asked about potential long-term effects of COVID-19, Ferentz said it’s a concern but nobody knows now what they may be and feels Big Ten has best plan in place to keep student-athletes safe.

-No decision has been made on protesting racial injustice before games. Left discussion in a good place before season was shut down and will revisit now moving forward. Met with senior this week and they are happy with changes to better address inclusion for everyone in the program. Plans for coaches to go through training. Need to wait to judge how they’re doing in addressing issues.

Here’s the press conference, which starts at about the 14-minute mark of this video:
