Miller and Deace discuss the return of Ken O’Keefe and what that means for the Iowa football program
Good podcast. Disagree with Deace tho, when saying KF had his best years when he was the most stubborn. KF felt so much pressure after the 2014 season that he actually BROKE his decade-plus pattern and issued a January 2-deep which included demotion of a seasoned veteran QB with a winning record — very UN-Ferentz like behavior by any standard. The result in 2015 was a 12-0 regular season.
Perhaps this question will be answered by the remaining 2 hires, but my concern going forward with the offensive staff structure and KOK is: who is ultimately responsible for the passing game? Brian’s history is with O-line and the running game. If KOK’s role is going to be limited to coaching QBs, and the next 2 hires are a RB and WR coach, who gets held responsible if Iowa’s passing game tanks or stays the same production-wise as 2016? The logical organization, it seems to me, would have been to name Brian the OC, hire a RB/Run Game Coordinator, and then have either your QB coach or WR hire be the Passing Game Coordinator. Perhaps they will do that when they name the WR coach. But, using Deace’s term, Brian is making a big political mistake if someone is not named to be officially responsible for the passing game — otherwise it falls on him, which by his own admission is not his area of expertise. Plus, it just makes sense in this day and age.
