Brody Brecht

The Iowa football commitment momentum continued on Friday when Ankeny junior Brody Brecht announced his verbal pledge. The Hawkeyes have added five recruits in their 2021 Class during the last week.

“I felt Iowa can get me to the NFL and make me the best player I can be. I wanted to play baseball as well,” Brecht told HN Friday.

Brecht (6-4, 195) trimmed his list of prospective schools to Iowa and Iowa State in March. He also held offers from Kansas, Kansas State and Nebraska.

“Things are going very well with Iowa,” he told HN earlier this year. “I’m feeling good about what they have going on. I have a very strong relationships with coach (Jay) Neimann and coach (Kelton) Copeland because I talk to them the most. They’re checking in weekly. I also talk with both Kirk and Brian (Ferentz) once in a while.

“The program is very successful, especially after coming off a big bowl win.”

Brecht told HN that he would officially visit both in-state schools during June and then make his decision. He ended up not needing those trips to make his choice after visiting Iowa and Iowa State multiple times unofficially.

Iowa has added three verbal commitments in the cycle this week with Brecht joining offensive lineman David Davidkov and Kansas City receiver Arland Bruce IV. Urbandale defensive end Max Llewellyn and Missouri offensive lineman Beau Stephens announced their pledges last week. The Hawkeyes have accumulated 14 known verbals in the ’21 cycle.

“I will bring toughness, competitiveness and a kid who will go 110% every play,” Brecht said.

Brecht mixes size and speed that compares with current Iowa wideout Brandon Smith. He’s being clocked at 4.5 seconds in the 40-yard dash.

Rivals and 247 see Brecht as a three-star recruit. The latter rates him as the No. 62 receiver nationally in ’21, while the former puts him sixty fifth.

As a junior, Brecht caught 35 balls for 796 yards and seven touchdowns, including a 84-yard score. He also contributed three solo tackles and an interception on defense.

Brecht is also a standout baseball player for Ankeny, posting a 1.084 OPS with 15 steals in 16 attempts as a hitter and 70 strikeouts in 42 2/3 innings and a .182 batting average against on the mound. He will try to fit that sport into his schedule at Iowa.
