Several games into the 2011 season, defensive backs coach Phil Parker asked true freshman John Lowdermilk if he would consider removing his redshirt. The Hawkeyes needed help on special teams and with depth in the secondary.
Lowdermilk jumped at the chance. In hindsight, it cost him an opportunity to be a fifth-year senior during Iowa’s 12-0 regular season in ’15.
As it ended up, Lowdermilk played through a rollercoaster stretch of seasons with the Hawkeyes where there was a quarterback controversy and assistant coaching turnover. We caught up with him for our latest Hawkeye History Podcast to talk about those times and how he grew from adversity.
The podcast ran for almost an hour and we still didn’t get to all of his interesting stories. We left out the time he quit the Hawkeyes and drove all the way to his sister’s in North Carolina before Parker and head coach Kirk Ferentz convinced him to come back.
Oh well, we get to those topics the next time we catch up with him for a podcast.
