Iowa Basketball picked up its first verbal commitment in the 2022 recruiting class on Monday afternoon. New York big man Riley Mulvey announced his verbal pledge on social media.
"Iowa has always been my No. 1," the 6-foot-11, 230-pound junior told HN. "I was planning to visit and decide after, but with COVID visits weren't going to be what I thought. After I realized that, I decided to commit."
Mulvey, who plays for Albany (NY) St. Thomas More High, chose the Hawkeyes ahead of offers from Syracuse, Penn State and others.
247Sports ranks Mulvey as a three-star prospect, the No. 3 player overall in NY for '22 and the No. 33 center in the country for the cycle.
HN spoke with Mulvey back when he was offered a scholarship last April.
“It put me at a loss for words, in a sense,” Mulvey said at the time of the opportunity . “I was not expecting it. I was just talking with coach and enjoying the conversation. It was really exciting to have a Big Ten offer already as a sophomore.”
