Schwartz: 10 Sentences – Alternate Uniforms Edition

June 30, 2019

Written by David Schwartz

Hopefully by now you’ve seen them. If not, enjoy No. 2 in this weekend’s 10 Sentences.

1. We’ve been asking for it for years: alternate Hawkeye football uniforms in which gold is the dominant color.

2. And now we’ve got it.

3. The UI athletic department unveiled last week the gold-with-black-accent uniforms that the team will wear Oct. 12 against Penn State, and to splash even more interest, part of that black accent will mimic the brief winged shoulder period from the mid-1990s.

4. (A period that IMO we romanticize; those things were ugly – they somehow didn’t even look good on Sedrick Shaw, and that takes effort; also, I owned one.)

5. But … pastiche has its place, even in Big Ten athletics, and so if we finally get our wish of gold uniforms, I suppose we can deal with the wings, too.

6. It’s fun to think about what kinds of memories might be made in those uniforms during the Penn State game – good ones hopefully (obviously) – to go along with other recent games in which Iowa took the field in alternate uniforms, most notably the 55-24 win against Ohio State in 2017 and the 40-35 win against Minnesota in 2015.

7. The Ironmen throwbacks worn during the 2004 season were pretty cool, too, and one of the first times I can remember the Hawkeyes having a little fun with their uniforms.

8. The worst-case scenario, of course, would be some kind of a dramatic or hugely lopsided loss, which means we’d likely never see all gold again; sports people – players, coaches, fans – are superstitious folks, and if some kind of miserable defeat happens in uniforms being worn for the first time, it somehow will partially be the uniform’s fault, which means it will also be the last times those uniforms are seen at Kinnick.

9. I used to think it’d be kind of cool to also invert the helmet – gold helmet with black Tiger Hawk – but I don’t anymore because that seems sacred, as if no matter how much fun they have messing with the uniforms every couple of years, there has to be something grounded in tradition, and the helmets are the source of that grounding.

10. So in a week in which not much happened in the Hawkeye universe (unless you count the very cool development that through four WNBA games Megan Gustafson has a 22.5 points-per minute rating while shooting 64.3 percent from the field), the uniforms were something light and fun to enjoy as our summer pokes along and football season creeps closer; that’s what we need this time of year: pleasant, low-impact content.
