Schwartz: 10 Sentences – From Ecstasy to Agony in 10 Seconds

January 13, 2019

In a week’s time the Hawkeye men’s basketball team climbed from the Big Ten basement to securely in the middle. Where they go next is anyone’s guess, especially following Saturday’s tumble by a certain junior forward from St. Louis. Here are 10 sentences to make sense of it all.

1. It’s crazy how sports turn on a dime: one second you’re enjoying Iowa taking care of business Saturday against Ohio State, then the next you’re looking at the replay frame-by-frame trying to figure out how bad Tyler Cook’s ankle is.

2. Everything about that game was perfect—until Cook went down; that’s when you’re overcome with one of those “why me” feelings that only misanthropic sports fans can feel.

3. Hopefully it’s nothing more than a minor sprain and he won’t miss too much time, because we know how much this season and his future mean to him (and us, if we’re going to be honest sports fans).

4. Still, what a good win for the Hawkeyes, who have worked their way back to .500 in the Big Ten following an 0-3 start that could have been catastrophic—plus Cook gifted us this terrific block:

5. Count me among those who were worried—even downright negative—about Iowa’s long-term chances for this season following the Jan. 3 loss to Purdue, when they dropped to 0-3 in the conference just a few days after narrowly escaping Bryant University, a school that currently stands 5-10 and one that Ivy League colleges schedule to round out their nonconference schedules (Bryant went 1-3 versus the Ivy).

6. But that was then, and this is now, with the Hawkeyes appearing to have turned a corner, or figured things out, or whatever cliché best explains how a good basketball team playing poorly suddenly starts playing well again.

7. Huge congrats to Jordan Bohannon on reaching 1,000 points for his career on Saturday, and there’s a decent shot that by the end of this season he’ll be the highest-scoring Bohannon brother in NCAA history—the prize for that is serious bragging rights for the rest of your life.

8. The Hawkeye Universe gets grumpy when anyone criticizes Bohannon, but here’s hoping the rest of his regular-season shooting is more like the Nebraska game, when he shot 5-of-8 from three-point range, and less like the last two games, when he’s sunk a total of one three-pointer; slumps happen, but when Bohannon’s confidence soars and his shots fall, it’s magic.

9. On to football, where Amani Hooker, Anthony Nelson, and Noah Fant don’t love us anymore, but here’s to hoping that the reason that T.J. Hockenson said nearly two weeks ago that he was 95 percent sure about his decision—yet still hasn’t officially announced—is because he’s leaning toward returning.

10. There is no evidence that’s true, and I’ve done no original reporting, but Hawkeye fans can dream, right?
