Schwartz: Ten Sentences – You Do You Edition

Iowa upset Minnesota on Saturday, 23-19. Ten sentences to put the win in perspective:

1. The Hawkeyes finally earned their signature 2019 win, knocking off No. 8 and previously undefeated Minnesota – one of their most heated rivals – at Kinnick Stadium, and in doing so ruined said rivals’ national-title aspirations and held onto Floyd of Rosedale, the most historic of the four trophies for which they compete each season.

2. A good day’s work.

3. Students were first to storm the field, as college sports fans tend to do after a major victory, and other fans followed their lead until the green of the grass-like surface was hidden by bodies, and Hawkeye players found themselves surrounded by those who wanted to congratulate them and help celebrate their accomplishment.

4. It was a night to remember, but not for everyone, because apparently the shameful fans on the field forgot the Hawkeyes had just beaten not Ohio State or Penn State, but allegedly lowly Minnesota; charging the field wasn’t a sign of happiness – it was a sign that Iowa, for shame, for shame, had lowered its standards.

5. Whatever happens, DO NOT ALLOW YOURSELF TO FEEL OVERCOME BY JOY.

6. Forget that this is the most in command that quarterback Nate Stanley has looked in a meaningful game since last season’s Outback Bowl; forget that Tyler Goodson solidified himself as Iowa’s present and future running back; forget that linebacker Kristian Welch returned from injury and the unit looked the best collectively it has all season; forget defensive coordinator Phil Parker’s brilliant move in the final minute to move AJ Epenesa to defensive tackle, which put Epenesa in position to blow past Minnesota’s interior linemen for a key sack; forget the bragging rights that come from beating a rival such as Minnesota and the knowledge that this year’s Gophers players and coaches will always know that Iowa tarnished their best season since the early 20th century.

7. Forget all of it; instead, let’s put football in its proper place: A serious activity, one with life-and-death consequences that will determine the future of the human race, world peace, whether your mortgage gets paid, and how many top colleges will recruit your child to play first-chair viola in the university orchestra.

8. It’s all so ridiculous, isn’t it?

9. You do you: If you want to celebrate, celebrate; if the students want to rush the field and they’re not hurting anyone and the university has no problem with it, let them rush without judgment; if you were taught that expressions of pleasure were unbecoming symbols of misplaced pride and poor reflections on the larger community, that’s fine too, but if that’s you, you react how you want to react and please accept others for how they choose to react.

10. The Hawkeyes won – hooray, they won! – a meaningful game on a beautiful day in Iowa City, and if someone’s big takeaway is that they were embarrassed by how the students and others celebrated peacefully, well, I’m not sure what else to say.
