Schwartz: Turning A Mirror On College Sports

Let’s have some fun with quotes and headlines from around college athletics.

Hypocrisy, thy name is NCAA:

… as far as paying players, professionalizing college athletics, that’s where you lose me. I’ll go do something else, because there’s enough entitlement in this world as it is. – Clemson head football coach Dabo Swinney, 2014

Ah yes, NFL Draft punditry. One step removed from bracketology:

… [Noah Fant’s] route-running is a work-in-progress and he’s not even close to being an effective blocker. Moreover, there were times in school where his awareness was awful as, (sic) he’d often be slow off the snap or unaware of what the play was. – Dave Richard, April 26, 2019

Fant has a tall, athletic frame (6-4, 249 pounds) and exceptional explosiveness. He moved around in the Iowa scheme, putting his hand in the dirt, splitting out wide or aligning in the wing. He explodes off the line of scrimmage and is a very fluid route runner. He creates a lot of separation and tracks the ball easily over his shoulder. Fant isn’t as effective when he’s working underneath. He lacks polish and drops some easy balls. He also has a bad habit of unnecessarily jumping for balls that are put on his frame. After the catch, he uses his speed to pull away from defenders. He is a shield blocker in the run game, lacking tenacity and physicality in that department. Overall, Fant is a special athlete who is at his best working vertically. He has some shortcomings in other areas, but he’ll be a big-play producer right away for his drafting team. – Daniel Jeremiah, April 3, 2019

Both of these statements about University of Arizona men’s basketball coach Sean Miller allegedly paying players cannot be true:

Evidence that, despite our cynicism, cheating and alleged cheating in college basketball comes with serious consequences:

It was certainly something to behold. – Ron Nadell, on his City College of New York basketball team that in 1950 won both the NCAA and NIT crowns, which nobody remembers because …

If a college football player jumped around this much, they’d be stripped of three years of eligibility and would have their own segment on the following day’s First Take.

On Thursday (sic) night, the University of Iowa announced that Jay Niemann will round out the Hawkeye staff. He will serve as Iowa’s assistant defensive line coach and assistant recruiting coordinator. This will be Niemann’s third job he has accepted this off-season after he was not retained as the Rutgers defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. He was hired by Kansas to be a defensive analyst in January but was offered to become Wyoming’s linebacker coach in February. – David Eickholt, May 1, 2019
