Hawkeye History Pod: Jovon Johnson Delivered for Iowa Football, in the Pros

Stop me if you’d heard this story before. No other Power 5 school wanted Jovon Johnson. Iowa did. He became a Hawkeye hero.

That the program has shown a consistent ability of finding the diamonds in the rough, that doesn’t take any shine off of what this Erie, PA product produced. Seen as undersized by other big colleges, Johnson started as a true freshman and earned all-Big Ten honors three times, twice landing on the first team. His 17 career interceptions from 2002-05 rank second on Iowa’s all-time list, one behind legendary Nile Kinnick and Devon Mitchell.

Johnson logged 13 years in professional football, becoming the first defensive back to claim the CFL’s Defensive Player of the Year award. He recently retired and went into coaching. He was promoted to defensive coordinator at D-III Defiance College in December.
