Punting is winning has become a popular catchphrase in Hawkeye Nation. Fans understand how an aspect of the game, mundane to many onlookers, serves an important role in Hawkeye coach Kirk Ferentz’s system.

We caught up with one of the best to ever do it in the 21 seasons under the dean of college coaches. Ryan Donahue twice was a Ray Guy Award finalist and was a semifinalist on another occasion. He started in the NFL before a career-ending injury.

Donahue talked with is about why special teams are so important at Iowa, why Hawkeye fans’ understanding of his position is unusual, being a part of three bowl wins, losing his job during the COVID-19 economic impact and more.
