Iowa often relies on relationships and connections when reaching out of the region in recruiting. That’s the case with Class of 2021 Florida athlete Dink Jackson.

The Hawkeyes offered the Melbourne (FL) Eau Gallie High standout a scholarship on Thursday. He’s the cousin of Iowa running back Mekhi Sargent, who played at Key West (FL) High.

“The Iowa offer was great. It means a lot to me with the connection I have with Iowa. I was excited that they liked my film,” Jackson told HN.

Jackson (6-2, 185) can find out more about the Hawkeyes from Sargent. And he trusts his relative to give him the real scoop.

“Me and Mekhi have a good bond. Anytime he’s in Key West and I’m there, we hang out. I look up to him as a big brother even though he’s my cousin. We’ve always been tight since we were little,” Jackson said.

Assistant Derrick Foster is leading Iowa’s recruitment of Jackson.

“They loved my versatility and effort,” he said.

Jackson plays all over the field for his high school, including outside linebacker and running back. His team is 8-1.

“I would love to get up to Iowa. That’s something me and my family will work on. Obviously, everyone is trying to get me to visit. I’m just really focused on my team and winning a state championship right now,” he said.

The competition for Jackson is stiff. He reports offers from Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, LSU, Michigan, Oklahoma, Penn State and many others.

After verbally committing and de-committing from Florida already, Jackson is taking his time with the recruiting process, hoping to find the best fit.

“I want to be wanted. I feel like I’m a difference maker in any program. I want to feel the love. Also, I want to have a great relationship with the coaches and feel at home when I step on campus,” he said.

Rivals and 247 rank Jackson as a four-star prospect and among the top 225 players nationally in his class regardless of position.
