Iowa secured a verbal commitment from legacy recruit Griffin Liddle on Sunday. His father, Josh Liddle, wrestled for the Hawkeyes in the early 2000s.

Griffin timed his announcement with his parents in mind.

“I told (Josh) last Tuesday, but I waited for his birthday (Sunday) to tell the coaches. I wanted to commit then because I wanted to make it special because of all the great things he and my mom have done for me. Without them and the rest of my family, I wouldn’t be in this place and I really appreciate everything they do for me on a daily basis,” Griffin said.

The Class of 2021 lineman from Bettendorf selected the Iowa ahead of reported scholarship offers from Army, Iowa State, Michigan State, Minnesota and Nebraska. The Hawkeyes offered him in March of last year when he was 14 years old.

“I chose Iowa because it felt like home. It just felt like the place to be. I knew if I didn’t go there, I would regret it,” Griffin said.

“Iowa was just the place for me ever since I was growing up, and I would never change my decision in my life. I did it now because it was the time. I didn’t want to waste any time, and I wanted to get it over with.”

Liddle (6-3, 270) played on both lines for a Bettendorf team that reached the Class 4A State semifinals this season. He contributed 49 total tackles, 10 of which resulted in losses. He added 2.5 sacks.

“What Iowa fans will see in me is just a kid that never gives up and strives to do his best in everything I do. I will always give 100 percent, and I will always bleed Black and Gold,” Griffin said.

Liddle joined Minnesota linebacker Justice Sullivan in pledge to the Hawkeyes’ ’21 class. They joined Urbandale linebacker Jaden Harrell, Cedar Rapids Kennedy lineman Connor Colby and Gennings Dunker, a lineman from Illinois.

“I am so happy I made this decision. It is the best decision I will ever make in my life. This is because Iowa is the place to be and they develop kids into men that will have a great life ahead of them,” Griffin said.
