Brenden Deasfernandes Makes the Call for Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa came into this week without any defensive backs in its 2020 recruiting class. The Hawkeyes ended it with at least three.

Belleville (MI) High’s Brenden Deasfernandes announced his commitment in a social media post Sunday morning while on his official visit. He joined Illinois safety AJ Lawson, who announced his pledge Saturday night during his visit and Florida’s Keylen Gulley who jumped in Tuesday.

Deasfernandes became the 16th known verbal commitment in the cycle. It was expected the group would end up with 20-25 members.

“I decided that Iowa was the right fit for me for many reasons. One reason why is because of the ecstatic environment. The environment around Iowa is just such a good place,” he told HN.

“Another reason why is because of the players and coaching staff. The players and coaching staff show so much love. They treat you as if you are their child, and that is one of the main reasons why I chose The University of Iowa.”

Deasfernandes (6-1, 165) reports a 3.7 GPA. His stock has been rising with strong performances at combines and camps this spring and summer.

Davenport University, Northwood and Southeast Missouri State also reportedly offered Deasfernandes. Bowling Green was among a group of programs showing him interest.
