The week started out well for Iowa despite the recruiting dead period marching on amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Chicago-area defensive lineman Jeremiah Pittman announced on social media that he was verbally committing to the Hawkeyes.

Iowa offered the Arlington Heights St. Viator standout back in March. He spoke with HN back then about the opportunity.

“I loved the old-school approach they take with their team,” Pittman told HN after committing. “Coach (Kelvin) Bell and coach (Kirk) Ferentz are two guys I can see myself getting along with.”

Pittman (6-2, 260) became the 15th known verbal commitment in Iowa’s 2021 recruiting class. He joined Max Llewellyn and Jeff Bowie as projected defensive linemen in the cycle.

Rivals and 247 rank Pittman as a three-star prospect. The former sees him as the 45th best defensive end nationally in the 2021 class and the No. 19 player overall in Illinois for the cycle. The latter puts him as the No. 53 defensive tackle and 23rd in his state.

Pittman also reports scholarship offers from Boston College, Iowa State, Michigan State, Minnesota, Missouri, Northwestern, Syracuse, Texas Tech, Wisconsin and others.

Iowa was unable to play host to Pittman this spring because of the recruiting dead period brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. It’s been extended through June.

“There was no reason to wait. Visits will most likely not happen this summer and we had all the info we could possibly get from all the schools,” he said.

Assistant Seth Wallace has been leading Iowa’s recruitment of Pittman.
