Detroit-Area CB Daraun Mckinney Talks About Signing with Iowa

Daraun Mckinney heard a lot of recruiting pitches. The one delivered by Iowa resonated the most with him.

The Hawkeyes received a signed letter of intent from the River Rouge (MI) standout on Wednesday. The cornerback had been committed to Northern Illinois since June.

“Something that sticks with me from them that hasn’t with anyone else is that I have to come in and earn everything I want and that nothing will be given. Other coaches give players that “you’ll come in and start” set-up and that doesn’t happen that way,” McKinney told HN.

He also reported scholarship offers from Indiana, Cincinnati, Toledo and other MAC schools. He officially visited Iowa this past weekend. That sealed the deal.

“It was just a feeling that felt everlasting through the weekend because it was something I totally didn’t expect in all aspects,” he said. “I’m comfortable with my decision because they made me comfortable the whole weekend. I know I’m in good hands with outstanding people all around me.”

Iowa was looking to add depth at cornerback after losing Josh Turner and Trey Creamer to transfer after the regular season. And McKinney adds more than just someone working in the secondary.

“(The Iowa coaches) told me I’ll be good to use on special teams a lot with my returning skills,” he said.

McKinney would like to contribute early if he can.

“My goals are to get there and beat out the best for the small window of opportunity that I will have to showcase myself,” he said.

He hopes his play appeals to Hawkeye fans.

“They can expect a hard-working kid that comes from Detroit Michigan to come in and give their hometown team or childhood team everything I can,” he said.

The recruiting process taught McKinney a lot. He heard the coaches’ pitches and picked up some life lessons.

“I learned that things can happen when you least expect it and to never get too comfortable,” he said.

McKinney still is undecided about a college major.
