Connor McLaughlin took an unofficial visit to Iowa in April. The Floridian spent a lot of time getting to know the coaching staff. It went well.

When he returned to campus for an official visit last weekend, he furthered his relationship with the coaches. But what stood out to him was the meetings with guys who would be his future teammates if he went there.

“I liked the time with the players the most. Jack Plumb hosted me, and I loved how humble and normal he was. He wasn’t cocky or arrogant at all,” McLaughlin told HN.

The Hawkeyes offered him a scholarship in March. He’s been piling up opportunities ever since then.

Still, there’s something special about Iowa.

“I loved how I fit in the program with (offensive line) Coach P (Tim Polasek) showing film. It feels like a natural fit,” McLaughlin said.

“Also, speaking with coach (Kirk) Ferentz was great because it’s amazing to see what he’s done to the program and how long he’s held his grasp.”

Ferentz is entering his 21st season with the Hawkeyes. The longest tenured FBS coach in the country boasts a strong reputation for developing offensive linemen.

“I like the mentality of Iowa and how hard everyone works,” McLaughlin said.

He’s scheduled to officially visit Georgia Tech this coming weekend and then is off to Stanford.

His list of 30 offers also includes USC, Florida State, Michigan State, Northwestern, Louisville, Nebraska and Maryland.

“Hopefully I will have a decision by the end of summer,” McLaughlin said.

His Tampa Jesuit High teammate from last season, safety Dean Belton, signed with the Hawkeyes in the ’19 recruiting class.

Rivals and 247 rank McLaughlin as a four-star recruits. The former sees him as the No. 19 offensive tackle nationally in the ’20 cycle, while the latter puts him at 29.
